What Color Blush Should I Wear for Dark Skin

It's 2021, so why are some of my peers still telling me that blusher is a tricky business? Why are we, as a whole demographic, being deprived of this gaze? Women with darker skin often find that the lack of pigmentation and the chalky texture of many popular blushers in the market (amongst mass beauty consumers) isn't compatible with their skin colour. In a climate where video calling is a lifeline, and Zoom face got us obsessed with our own reflection, now is a good time to look for a few products that will enhance those lackluster cheekbones, due to poor sun exposure and well, WFH fatigue! sighs heavily

blush verb 1. "to shine brightly; to look, gaze, stare," 2. "colour flush and glow to red"

Some of us love the look of rosy cheeks, for a youthful look. Some of us just like to add a splash of subtle colour when using full coverage bases which can take away dimension to the face and some of us prefer blush that frames our profile and makes us look Bella Hadid-type snatched. Either way, most of us do love a bit of blush. However, finding the perfect one when you have dark skin can be a laborious task to say the least.

We like to split blushers into three subsections of texture, we're used to seeing either an easy to blend and build powder blush, a cream/balm blush for our dewy babes out there, or a mousse for the No-Makeup Makeup Marys, which all work differently in terms of application. Powder is typically applied with a blusher brush and cream and mousse can be applied by using your fingers or with a brush.

We spoke to makeup artist and brand spokesperson for Bare Minerals, SJ Froom, to glean her best tips when it comes to all things blush. "It's all about skin that's clean, bright and polished with a pop of blush on the apples of the cheeks to lift the face and create natural definition that shapes your cheekbones," she said.

"Powder blusher work beautifully over a mineral powder foundation or finishing powder; this way the pigments give an airbrushed finish which naturally blurs imperfections. I love powder blush as it applies seamlessly to the skin, you can't see where the colour starts or stops. For liquids and creams its best to lightly blend straight onto of tinted moisturiser or liquid foundation before powder as this will give a fresh dewy finish with added luminosity."

Less is more with blusher generally; start small and build it up where needed. Apply your blusher right onto the centre of the apple of the cheek and blend in circular motions, you can always add slightly more and sweep the colour up very gently towards the temples.

To find the right shade for your skin tone, undertones are not to be underestimated. Froom suggests:

For olive skin undertones:

  • try corals and peaches shades - these will work better on lighter brown skin

For cool undertones:

  • try pink shades - these will also work better for lighter brown skin

For deep and neautral undertones:

  • try mauve shades - these will work best for medium to deep skin

"I like to mix things up and will sometimes layer different blushers and create my own shade," she adds." she adds

Now that we tackled the application, here is a round-up of the best blushes that will keep you looking radiant…
